My doctor told me two weeks ago that my cholesterol is good and stopped my medication. Yesterday I got the results of my recent cholesterol test in an email. The doctor got the results so quickly but I was notified much later. I was glad to see the numbers and compare them to past results. What I found is that the bad cholesterol [LDL] had been dropping, but I was concerned that my good cholesterol [HDL] had also been dropping. During this last blood test my good HDL improved! I am thrilled! Looking at my food log at FS during the past three months, I saw that I changed my way of eating. I added these items daily: 1 to 3 teaspoons psyllium husks, 5 grams Brazil nut, 5 grams hazelnuts(filberts), 1/8 cup almonds, and 1 Tablespoon Chia seeds. Any or all of those must have increased my good cholesterol! I was also eating 1/8 cup sunflower seeds(no shell) but when I ran out of those I substituted 1 Tablespoon sesame seeds, so I am not sure if either of those helped increase my good cholesterol. Beware of fiber unless you add it slowly to your diet!

That is great!! Thank you for the tips on what you think has helped, I get bloodwork done soon and hope to see improvement, I'd love to get off some meds.

You're right on that fiber advice (otherwise over-reaction to it or feelings of bloating can happen). Congrats !

That is awesome!! I have always loved eating sunflower seeds when I have to get them from the shell. They fulfill my need for a crunchy snack along with their great health benefits Because of that, and accidentally, my good cholesterol number has always been high. I wish the eating of them (spitting out of shells) didn't make them so unattractive to eat!! LOL!! I eat the other nuts but far too quickly for the calorie count.

Thanks, everyone! I eat a bowl of oatmeal and an apple every day, with veggies at dinner which reduced my cholesterol medicine by half. It was after three months of eating the nuts, seeds and psyllium that my cholesterol medicine was stopped. :)

Tulipgirl, I eat those nuts every day. It is not a lot of nuts. 5 grams of Brazil nuts is like 1 single nut. 5 grams of hazelnuts (filberts) is like 3 of them. I usually don't fry any of my foods, just bake them. If I use oil, it is the butter flavor spray oil like "Pam," but the less expensive one from the Aldi store.

In the US, good cholesterol HDL is supposed to be 40 or above. My HDL on May 12, 2010 was 31! Horrible! I took cholesterol medicine but did not care about my cholesterol at all, because I had huge problems in my life and my health was not important to me. When I was diagnosed diabetic January 04, 2013, I was surprised, but not enough to do anything about it! When my doctor doubled my diabetic medicine on April 29, 2013, I started eating oatmeal and an apple daily, ate healthy foods, stayed away from sugar, and started walking. I began with 300 steps a day and increased to 1000, 2000, 3000 or even 5000 steps on some days. At my checkup on February 14, 2014 my doctor cancelled my diabetic pills because I was no longer diabetic and my cholesterol was better so my cholesterol medicine was cut in half. My HDL jumped from 31 to 36, but my good cholesterol was still below normal. After I ate nuts, seeds and psyllium fiber every day for three months, my good cholesterol HDL on May 14, 2014 was 39. Almost normal!

PS: Normal LDL is anything less than 100. I don't remember what my bad cholesterol LDL was in 2010 but on April 29, 2013 it was 118 and now it is 66! It is very important to eat healthy, but part of having good cholesterol is being active. I am not a vegetarian. I do eat chicken once a week and fish twice a week, and on special occasions I eat beef or lamb. Shrimp is a restaurant option, and I drink sugar free whey protein every day to make sure I get enough protein. Too much information and too many numbers in this journal today! Thanks for reading this. :)

As someone who has been dealing with cholesterol issues for almost 20 years I know how nice it is to see good numbers - Congrats! As for the good cholesterol, I'm sure your doctor told you but the only significant way to improve it is with cardiovascular exercise. Even so, some people (like myself) have a chronically low HDL number- even when I was training for triathlons and marathons 60+ hours a week my number only hovered in the low 30s. Hope you have a happy and healthy Thursday :)

Thank you! Another thing I forgot to mention is that I have been eating 1/2 cup of frozen blueberries every day, so blueberries did help drop my bad LDL cholesterol since last year. It was the nuts, seeds and psyllium that I had during the last three months that helped raise my good cholesterol HDL.
