Family birthday dinner tonight. Cake and other high carb foods on the menu...I have to figure out a way to say no to cake without a ton of questions. Telling my family that I am trying to lose weight is an invition to hours of torture on how it is bad for me and how I always gain it back. uuggh....

I have no desire for the carbage. I'm good with salad and meat...but these people have NEVER been supportive of my goals. It is the strangest dynamic. I wonder why they feel they need to keep me down. This is why I have to hide it from them. I won't see them again until April...so I've got to make it through today!

Family dynamics are set in stone. My parents started it. I am the failure in the family and no matter what I achieve it has always been overlooked and discounted, while the least bit of success by one of the other siblings is laid out for all to praise. It is REALLY sick. So, if they see that I am going to rock the boat in any way, including losing weight, they ALL come on full force. I'm freaking 58 and this has been going on for my entire life! I never get used to it and it still hurts...even in my later years.

Tell them you have been ill and just still have an upset stomach ... they wont want you to purge everywhere now will they ...if they still insist get up and run towards the bathroom hand over your mouth like you are going to be ill...sneak out the backway and go home lol

OK so that was my wounded inner child speaking! I have to remind myself before visiting with them that I am a successful independent educated woman, with a lifetime of experience, many great friends, have held some pretigious jobs and have owned 2 businesses. AND IT DOES NOT MATTER WHAT THEIR PERCEPTION IS.

Boy, talk about being between a rock and a hard spot! I love Monstermansmom's solution, but don't know your family. Maybe you could craft a speech that lasts a couple of hours about how bad the cake (sugar, processed flour, fat, etc) is for you and skip the diet part?

I usually say no thank you, I am too full & tell them I will take it home if they keep pushing. Then I toss it 😂

Thanks for the help guys! I made it through the night and only witnessed 1 account of my mother talking sh## about me to a complete a stranger. Boy, did I give her the DEATH STARE. I kinda did what lilpurplebug said to do, I asked to take the cake home, then I conveniently left it on the counter when I left.
