ChrisSpark的日记, 2014年12月5日

I am a little late with the weigh-in, but happy with the result. I have lost 30 pounds since the beginning of July and 15 pounds since I joined the TOPS meetings on September 23. This is a good result.

I have been testing out if I can stay on track without logging my food and it seems that I do OK. I did have two cheat days, one eating out with my sister during her visit and then a delicious Christmas dinner with TOPS where I indulged completely.

I have noticed a tendency to crave more sugar with the fatigue and depression I am battling against. I have to work hard to keep my coffee consumption down. I have even caved into consumption and eaten two candy cane donuts (my favorite) from Tim Hortons.

I visited my GP and she changed my medication for the depression and poor sleep. I know there will be a transition period, but I hope it helps. I have been experiencing more pain from the FM too, which makes the depression worse. A bit of a vicious cycle. I have maintained my walking but I have not been out to swim lately. I know it is good for me and I want to get out there again over the next few days, before my swimsuit gets too big.

I hope my American FS warriors had a lovely Thanksgiving and are recovering from all the yummy food!

Web MD has an article about winter depression in their latest newsletter. Can't link here because because it gets truncated. I'm bipolar myself, but mania is more of an issue for me. When I get depressed, it's caused by rumination/over thinking.

Thanks for the info. about the article, Chris. My depression is usually from rumination too, I do far too much of it and little of it is positive or good. I am working on it though.

I was able to stop most of my rumination using techniques from "The How of Happiness." One of them is - surprise - journaling.

FM and depression often go together. Exercise and lots of vitamin D and B complex helped me a lot last year. Upping the D's this year though. So far the increase in Ds has pulled me out f the SADD thing. No real fibro issue has flared as it usually does when the cold fronts hit. Hope your change in meds help.

Thanks wholefoodnut. How many units of vitamin D do you take? I increased from 1000 IU to 3000 IU but it isn't doing the trick this season. The FM pain has been worse than usual too.

Thanks Chris, I will check that one out too.

I found a sale on 180 capsules of 5000iu's each. I had been taking 3 400iu's so that was a big increase for me. I have pretty mild FM as it only flares a few times a year with really intense deep muscle pain everywhere. I have had just a few bouts this year, when the weather has slammed us with fronts colliding or several within a short time. Weather affects me a lot. I think getting rid of processed meats, unless totally chemical free and exercise has really helped me. No proof, just my opinion. I've heard the vitamin D helps also, I know it helps me with my lethargic hibernation mode I go into in the winter.

Thanks wholefoodnut, I have been wondering if increasing my intake of vitD might help, and it's worth a try. The weather really affects me too. I would say my FM is mild to moderate. I am in pain all of the time, all over my body, but mostly in the upper arms and hips. Then if I do too much it will get much worse and along will come the fatigue and a kind of "heaviness" and clumsiness. The disappointment for me is that I had hoped changing my diet to real food would make an improvement and instead my FM is worse. I really, really hope that it is just some kind of detox from all the years of unhealthy eating. Sort of while the fat that was stored during all that bad eating is burned it will be worse but when I reach my goal weight and have been eating real for a couple of years, there will be improvement. I really hope it isn't just wishful thinking. My mood had improved during the summer and early fall with better eating, and being hit by the seasonal downswing has been a real blow. Some of it is loneliness that is always magnified by the holiday season and that can't be helped with diet :-) I am very grateful to have this community of support.

Have you thought about a SAD light since winter and loss of daylight linked tobsome depression?

Hi Chris, I have one, but I used to get optical migraines when I used it. I am going to give it another try though. I think at this point that a migraine would be better than the way I feel.

I don't know whether it would help to start with smaller times and work your way up - or break it up into smaller periods.

Good suggestion Chris. I dug it out of the closet and have it on now. Keeping my fingers crossed. :-)

Chris if you get migraines try taking a calcium, zinc, magnesium supplement, my neurologist suggested it for my chronic migraines, we went through a preventative meds, and track everything year. Eliminated many triggers, mostly food, and weaned off the meds. If I quit taking my combo supplement I start getting migraines again. A plus it helps arthritis too with the calcium. Chris, I'm not sure how much you are exercising, terrible at keeping everyone here straight, exercise has been proven to help. Cardio, strength, and yoga. I swear exercise is what as helped my pain levels the most and my moods. My cane that I used daily hangs in my bathroom as a reminder to my to be active and stay on plan.
