I sincerely applaud anyone who can run at a moderate pace for more than a minute without dying. Because running is really hard. It doesnt have anything to do with my cardio level. I can elliptical and bike along with the best of them. But running is a completely different story, but something I think I am actually going to try to do more. Yesterday for cardio, instead of my usual elliptical I decided to try running. Well, I started off at a slow jog and did that for about a minute before wanting to die. Then I thought, "hey, if I go faster, maybe it would be easier." Nope. Not easier. I ended up maybe doing three rounds of sprints though, which isn't horrible for my first time really doing them. After the third sprint though, I completely gave up and decided instead to do an incline walk instead. Of course anyone who has ever done an incline before knows they are just as bad, sometimes worse. I was only doing an incline of 5, at 3.5mph, but it kicked my butt.

I think a reason cardio is so hard is because of my tiny little stumpy legs. I am only 4'11 to begin with and I feel like my legs are just super short. Do any other shorties out there have to work super hard when running?

Hope everyone is having a grand day!

Lol. Awesome. xD Well done and I'm sure you'll improve with time and practice! My first try at jogging was incredibly challenging, 'though doing it in the cold and first time going for 20-30 minutes probably wasn't the best choice. Jogging was hard enough, but actual running? Screw that. xD I've done random sprints and could probably manage 1 minute of that without dying, maybe more ... probably more, but not much more. It's weird, isn't it? You can be really healthy, but jogging/running without stopping for a solid amount of time is just something you really have to work for. Back in the day, I biked for 10 miles (possibly more) on the hardest setting, without stopping. Yet I bet I couldn't have run much. xD

Running is HARD. I'm only 5'3" - it took me 2 whole years to build up to running at 5.5mph for 30 minutes. When I first started I could only jog for 1 minute at a time. It's definitely a process but it does get easier! Good luck; I support you! :)

Running is fun BUT you can hurt yourself very easily if you try to go too far too fast. There is an app 0 to 5K that will work you in increments so that you can work up to running long distances. Also https://www.fitwatch.com/blog/couch-to-5k-exercise-plan has the same type of incremental running. Hope this helps. Don't give up!!!

You definitely have to build up to it...I just started a 10k program, it's a slow process but I'm 3 weeks in and am doing so much better...just gotta start small and start slow :) I'm 5'4" so I get it, I have a long torso and short legs, I feel your pain!!

A new exercise is always harder. Slow down. Form and function before speed and power.

JP is totally right....learn good form (use your hips, lean slightly forward, head up) and get good shoes....helped me immensely...

Running is very different from cardio on machines. You have to slowly build endurance. There are some great couch to 5k programs online. They can help you build up. I love running, but it is hard in the beginning.

Well, don't be too hard on yourself; I was running for 2 1/2 hours at a moderate pace, and Jillian Michaels' 30 day shred still kicked my butt. Whole different animal? You develop an aerobic efficiency when you run, and it uses a whole different set of muscles. Ran into the same thing swimming, or biking. None of them prepare you for the other. If you want to be proficient in all of them, you have to do all of them.

Even runningr on the treadmill is different from road runs in my opinion. It takes a lot of work and consistency. As the others said good form and good shoes make a big difference.

It's all in the breathing. Just like with swimming, you have to breathe with a rhythm to keep the oxygen flow steady.
