Reader beware - whining up ahead.

I went swimming yesterday. I do laps. My swimming apparel usually consists of my bathing suit which is too large (I bought it that way just because I didn't have the patience to try it on) and flippers and gloves that make my small fingers have webbing, and goggles. They call me Ariel (NOT!!! AND FAR FROM) ...

Anyway, the point of wearing this apparel is not really to go faster, but I'm thinking with the gloves and flippers, there is more resistance, because I'm pushing more water as I'm swimming. Thus, a bit more muscle building.

I know only two types of swimming, the crawl and floating on my back.

Yesterday, I forgot my gloves. And in my lane was an elderly gent and a young 20's very nice looking girl. Well both of them were doing the swimming like the frog thing. (I'm sorry, I don't know the name).

I can't do that swim for the life of me. I get a stiff neck very rapidly.

So yesterday, I'm swimming without any apparel, doing the crawl and both of them are passing me. So I up it a notch and again, they both pass me. I got ticked off, because that swimming technique is a slow technique. And anytime I swim without my apparel, people pass me. And I can't believe I suck so much at swimming. How can I be so slow when I'm to me I'm going at a good moderate pace. And they don't seem to be racing. I don't get it!

I really got so ticked off that I felt I sucked at it so much. I told myself, what the heck, the only thing I'm getting here is out of breath.

Bad enough it's an activity that has no amusement tied to it, (it's ok, but it's not fun) and involves a lot of work (washing, changing, drying etc) but to do it and feel like a failure at it...

Anyway, I'm looking for a sport to join. I was thinking about fencing...I need an exercise where while I'm doing it I will forget the effort I'm involved in. And also an exercise where I don't have to depend on someone else to do it.

I haven't totally given up on swimming, I just have to heal my ego.

Good nite to all.

Not to worry that you're not an olympic swimmer. Do it for the enjoyment. If you can find any. Fencing? Different and might be interesting. Give it a go.

Along with swimming you could join a class where they do exercises in the water. The only sports I can think of that you could do by yourself are running, bicycling, and skateboarding. Bowling you could practice by yourself, but eventually people would want your on their team. :)

The fencing thing sounds pretty cool. Just looking at those protective get-ups though gives me a hot flash! Suiting up is probably an exercise in and of itself. What about dancing at home? Bicycling sounds like a good one too. The thing is though, pretty much anything you do outside the house, other people will probably be there doing it too. And since you're relatively new to it, chances are it will be a similar scenario to the swimming. Remember that whatever you decide to do, you don't have to be the best. Just work on being your best. Oh, and you were not a failure. You moved. You got your heart rate going. You strengthened muscles. I don't see one whit of failure in there. Yeah, other people do more strokes and some are faster. That's lovely - but it doesn't necessarily mean they worked harder or got more out of it. You got from one side to the other. So did they. I call it a draw ;-)

I'm thinking of trying that thing (I forget the name) but it's like a skateboard with an upright stick with handles. I know it'll look a bit funny, but I bet you can have a little workout with speed, and it must get you places fast enough. Ooooohhh what is the name of it? And I don't know how I could lock it if I go somewhere with it. I have a bicycle path 2 min from where I am.

Never, ever give up on yourself. Keep at it. Besides you are doing it for the exercise anyway. And whatever swim move you are good at, do that. Great blog.

Yep, not drowning is very definitely successful! I also thought of another thing to try. This one is actually on my list. Get a rebounder (mini trampoline). A member here mentioned it and I've done a bit of reading. Seems to burn a lot of calories, good for the lymphatic system and is easy on the joints.

I tried that, but the pressure on my bladder with the extra weight when coming back down around makes it not a good idea.....

Hmmmm. Hadn't thought about that. That's one of the reasons I want to test one in person before buying. The concept seems good but I don't know how it would actually be in practice.

Well, if you try it in person, bring extra clothing...lol (you should thank me for that advice... it's not easy to give online...in full quasi full view.)

Ohhhhhhh mergatroids! So maybe I want to buy one where it's returnable and test it at home!

Oh, and as they say in the south, Bless Your Heart for the advice!
