Ugh! Got an email today that we will be having overdue employee annual valuations the first week of May. I never feel like these are productive and the last one we had (3 years ago) was extremely stressful as I had taken on all the work of an employee who left and never received a raise. When I asked for one, I was asked why and when I answered with the extra duties I took on I was told work is work. I fought for a raise and ended up getting one, but only about 2% of what I asked for. Usually get a cost of living raise, but the only raises above that I've had to ask for as we don't get anything for performance, which sucks and doesn't motivate me to do more. In the last valuation, they said they'd like for me to become a manager. . . we have 5 employees and 2 partners that are here full time. . who will I manage? I started taking classes to get my QKA certification (which no one else here has), but haven't completed them. Guess I need to get on that. My goal is to take the 3rd test this year. I haven't gotten very far with studying as right now my attitude is why. I passed the first 2 exams and received my ASPPA RPS certificate and got a Congratulations! email. I've had a bad attitude here for the last year and I'll probably have to hear about that. I was really disappointed to get a 2% raise in January. . not even cost of living! I've been here 17 years and have gotten too comfortable to look for something else, maybe I should look though.
Glad I got that rant out :)

I understand all that! Maybe you need to look elsewhere, if that's their attitude. It's nice to be appreciated when you are working for someone, not just you being grateful to have the job. Good Luck!

Very frustrating! Taking on someone else's work and not getting compensated for it accordingly. What is a QKA Certification?

QKA certification is Qualified 401(k) Administrator. I work for a Third Party Administration firm. We do TPA work for 401(k) and pension plans. I've done plan administration for the last 12 years, the first 5 years I was an administrative assistant.

I can understand why you're frustrated. I work for a state agency so there are no raises unless you get a promotion, well where I live there are no positions to be promoted to, so I'm stuck with just cost of living increases. It is frustrating, but the flexibility my job gives me makes it worth it right now. For you, it sounds like you don't have much benefit to balance not getting a raise. 17 years is a long time to be with a company and who wants to leave after that long? But, maybe you do need to start looking, at least if you got a job offer it would give you some leverage to get a raise and if they don't want to give it to you, then go where you'll be appreciated and compensated for what you do. Good luck!!
