Johanne的日记, 2010年08月13日

I'm beginning to wonder if I have Celiac disease and have had my whole life. I've accidentally been eating fairly gluten free for the last few weeks and find that when I eat gluten foods, I have really bad lower digestive problems and the muscle cramping (charlie horses) that I've always had. I just didn't notice they were gone until I started eating basically gluten free and then ate gluten, and there they were. I have had so many of the symptoms all my life, missing enamel when my secondary teeth grew in, extreme anemia diagnosed at six months old, hypothyroidism, muscle cramping. I have been SO tired since I was 15 yrs. old. I'm 66 now and my anemia is still so bad that, even with medication, I still have to go in for periodic transfusions. That's just not normal. Dr.s always said when I went through menopause, the anemia would go away and wanted me to have a hysterectomy. I didn't and it didn't. I have made an appt. with my GP to talk about this. I don't want to go gluten free if I don't have to. That would be such a pain in the boody, especially when eating away from home!

Hi, Johanne -- I am in a similar situation and have been trying to be gluten-free for the past couple of months (with some slip-ups, I'm sure). It has helped enormously. I have not been tested because I wanted to see what would happen on the diet first. I discovered by accident that when I ate meat, veggies, and fruits primarily, my anemia would disappear. On a "regular" diet, my hematocrit remained low, even with taking SlowFe iron pills. I've also had migraines all my life but am noticing that I don't have them anymore unless I've accidentally eaten something with gluten. Also, I used to have horrible gas and other digestive problems that have pretty much disappeared. I'm going to talk with my doctor about this because I certainly don't advocate self-diagnosing, but I just thought I would share my experiences. If you have been eating gluten-free though, the blood test will come out negative unless you start eating gluten again. The gluten-free diet is not that bad -- in fact, I don't even miss most stuff and I have found lots of surprisingly good gluten free products in my local supermarket for when I occasionally want pizza or pasta.

Except for the headaches, my experiences have been similar plus a few more symptoms. I was told the test was a biopsy. Perhaps I should load up on glutens between now and next Thursday's appt., no matter how lousy it makes me feel, so a bloodtest would register. I won't have any trouble in the world eating gluten free at home. There's the problem with dinner at other people's houses and occasional restaurants. Mexican wouldn't be a problem, but Italian sure would. LOL.
