I really am baffled by my weight gain! Yesterday I saw a weight on the scales that I haven't seen since December 2001 (ok, since it's just us, I'll tell you--190!!). But I am not that BIG, I was wearing size 14 or 16 jeans at that time and now I am wearing 10 or 12! I know I am exercising a lot more than I have been, can that REALLY be it?? I run about 9 miles a week and do yoga and cross train two days a week. Plus I ride horses, canoe, or hike most weekends. Before two years ago I was mostly sedentary...I keep waiting for the tide to turn...I WON'T GIVE UP...Any ideas welcome!!

Yes, exercise helps you lose fat and gain lean muscle. You can two people who are same weight, age body type etc. One weighs 140 and is a size 8 and the other weighs 150 and is a size 4. Google "why the scale lies" for insight in to water weight gain. People on Atkins can see a temporary gain on the scale from small things because of the low carbs. If you ate too much sodium yesterday, it can show up today. Exercise causes muscle fibers to tear and they retain water to help them heal. This can show a temporary gain on the scale. Many factors cause the scale to up and it doesn't mean that you gained fat. Your doing fine. Don't let the number on the scale derail you. It does lie.

Super fantastic, excellent post! I had to learn this the hard way because I'm 6' tall with a muscular build. I workout out all the time, and I notice when I run hard one day I would gain 2 pounds the next day and found out it was because increased blood volume. I also have similar experiences when I weight train with holding extra water weight. I currently weigh 171 lbs and wear a size 10. I have friends that wear the same size clothing as I do, but they weigh 145 - 150 lbs. It used to baffle me when I was younger. Now I know the rest of the story! :)
