Today I realized for the first time that I have officially dropped a pant size. I was walking to visit neighbors and noticed that the pants I was wearing (size 24) are baggy on me now. I am so happy that I have made this change in my eating habits and I am exercising more. I was asked if I was on a "diet" and I said no because I do not believe in the word. I always tell everyone that I am managing my weight.

I wanted to ask everyone what they thought about the word "diet". Do you like the word or hate it? How would you answer the question I was asked today? Have a great day.

Yay you! I do hate the word diet, but mostly because it is constantly on my mind and for so long..this time, I am not saying diet and I am quietly "eating better" and trying not to put so much pressure on myself by me or anyone else. I have found so far, it is a little liberating. Keep up the good work!

I have no problem with the word Diet....but I do have a problem with how other people react to it when I say I'm on a Diet...they wrinkle their nose, look at me funny....sheesh, sorry I'm not a size 0 and want to eat better...turds... :)

I would say that a lot of people think that a diet is just an amount of time they have to eat healthy and exercise and as soon as they get to their goal they can get back to their old habits. That is why many people have a yo-yo effect. I think that I have a new lifestyle, not that I'm on a diet since I will be eating like this for the rest of my life.

There aren't enough words to describe how much I DETEST the word "diet". To me it implies being deprived and extreme limitations. Even worse, it has a "short term" feel to it. You finish a diet....then what? Like you, I'm simply cleaning up my eating. I'm still eating ALL the foods I love...just in different proportions. In ten years, I hope to be eating the same way I'm eating today with perhaps a bit more flexibility in the decadent things ;-) And a huge congrats on shrinking out of the 24s!

diet implies a beginning and an ending. This should be approached as a new way of living life. Thus a lifestyle. It has to be healthy, fun, filling and nutritious.

I only think of "diet" as what I consume. It doesn't really have a positive or negative connotation for me. But, I do not consider what I am doing to improve lose weight a "diet" but rather a healthy lifestyle journey.

It depends on how the word is used. To be on a diet brings up connotations of trendy eating for a finite period of time...or as a bumper sticker I once saw "Die with a T added at the end." To maintain a healthy diet means (to me, at least) that you have made a long-term commitment to improved eating habits. There's a term that is used in business information circles that states "Garbage in; garbage out." The same holds true for eating habits. Congrats on dropping a pant size! That is a testament to maintaining a heatlhy "diet," as well as fitness.

Congratulations on the drop of the pant size.. does wonders doesn't it? I use the word "diet" when talking to friends that really do not understand what I am trying to do.. but I use the phrase "I hate that word".. I try to say that I am going through a life style change in my eating (diet is easier).. but in my mind's eye.. diet is so limited in what I am trying to do.. Diet has a set goal-- once you lost the weight you want, the "war" has been won. Thus people on a diet, CAN fall back into old habits, and the weight comes back. People diet can view 'giving' up comfort foods, treats-- sacrifice for the good of my weight goal..then after I get to that place.. than let us celebrate by eating cake!!! (know what I mean?) But if you look at it as a life style change... well it is a life time of new habits- it is a new life. Not to be discouraging but it is a life long war.. or at least till old eating habits are replaced with new one... making any sense?

Makes you kind of giddy when you realize the changes, doesn't it? I remember being in Costco getting a pair of jeans. Had to buy the pants before I could try them on. Got a size I thought I was, tried them on and they fell off my hips. I ran out yelling, they're too big!!!!!!!!!!!! Had to go 2 sizes smaller. It's keep getting better.

Ironically this JUST happened: a girl from our PSD department (who is rail thin) came in asking if I wanted to taste test a batch of cookies (I work in a chocolate factory), I said I couldn't because it wasn't in my Diet, she looked at me horrified lol..oh well...

People sometimes don't like the word diet because it has the word DIE in it. I just tell people I am eating healthier and exercising every day.

Thank you everybody for your words of encouragement. It really helps to talk to others who understand.

I do not like the word diet when it is referred to what I can not have. But when we are talking about all of the wonderful things I now eat because of my "diet" then yes it's okay. It's a redefined diet not a lose weight diet.

The first three letters say DIE. so I don't want that. I just say I am learning how to eat healthy.

For me the word Diet means: temporary fix. I am looking for a lifestyle change. Nice drop

technically, the word "diet" simply refers to one's eating - the food one consumes. Webster's dictionary states: "food and drink regularly provided or consumed; habitual nourishment". However, it brings up all sorts of images for different people. Use whatever words encourage you to feel good and nourished about what you are doing to care for yourself. In my experience, I can choose to take the sting out of or put it in to any word. Different people, different cultures all bring something different to understandings. If I were asked that question, I would respond similarly to you, that I have begun making more conscious choices about how I nurture myself - and that applies to so much more than food - in MY opinion.... And by the way: Good for YOU!! You are taking care of yourself and feeling good about it. What others think or say is just a by-product of the love you show yourself.
