Holding steady. Will write later.

1:00PM Went to the farmers market today and it was pretty active for a change. You'd think that as agrarian as Alabama is, there'd be shed after shed of vendors at what should be the biggest market in the city. But even on this Saturday, it's nowhere near as busy as Pike Place in Seattle.

I came out with a wonderful haul of fresh food though: peaches from SC, okra, sweet potatoes, and tomatoes from Sand Mtn, eggplant and cucumbers from Blount County, and a cantaloupe with a sticker that says "Kandy." Just looked that up and it's a big grower called Martori in Scottsdale, AZ, that even supplies Walmart. Hmmm, maybe our farmers are just buying their produce from WM and reselling it.

It was lunchtime, so I stopped at the market's taco stand and got a soft taco with shredded roast beef, onions, and cilantro with lime juice and green salsa, and no cheese. It was fabulous... not at all like a Taco Bell taco. Also got a chicken tamale. I like how they use only a tiny amount of chicken to flavor it.

Now I'm in the mood for some hot peppers. I am bewildered by all those varieties and should learn more about them.

Okra and tomatoes...hmmm...sounds like shrimp jambalaya for dinner...and you can throw in a few hot peppers for a real Creole flavor. Even diced eggplant is good in jambalaya.
