It sure feels good to stand on the scale and find myself another pound closer to my goal. Slow going, yes, but what's the rush when you are committed for life? I'm looking forward to discovering the real me that's been hidden beneath all those slabs of fat for so many years. Already the muscles are showing (good thing I've been working out), and giving me a clue about what lies beneath. And complete strangers comment on my physique when I'm wearing something that reveals my muscular arms. Strong, beautiful muscles! They're also great for burning calories on those days I slip in a few too many. But it's OK to keep your metabolism guessing by eating more than your allotment now and then. I always try to eat as much as I can without gaining weight, then drop down to a lower amount and lose a pound every two weeks or so.

Each time I lose another pound and chart it on my 4-year graph I am heartened to see that my new way of thinking about leading a healthy lifestyle is changing the way I look and feel. After the initial loss of 30 pounds, I was up and down a bit, getting as low as 138, then wandering up to 146, though never back to 180 where I started, and certainly not the 210, my all-time high.
But changing the default setting to a healthy, aware, active lifestyle pays off in the long run. When I decided to do a graph, recording my weight every other week, each year plotted over the former in a different color, I noticed that right after Christmas every year, I was the same weight, 146. The holidays were interfering with my success, destroying my accomplishments, setting me back, making it take longer to reach my goal.
Seeing that helped me understand that I had control of the situation and motivated me to renew my commitment. Each party or food event got me started, and then I felt I had failed and would eat more later. So this year, 1) I'm starting out at my lowest weight since I was 28, 2) I'm going to enjoy the parties and maybe do more exercise to compensate for the extra calories, and 3) I'm not going to call myself bad for feasting when the feasting is good.
I don't have to become an over-eater just because I over-ate. I fall back on a healthy lifestyle instead of back on a disastrous one. I am not in a hurry to lose the weight because I plan to maintain this lifestyle for as long as my body will allow.

Thinking again about the meaning of commitment, I realized that my old bad eating and exercise habits were just as much a commitment as my new ones are. Success is less about willpower and more about commitment. You can fall off the wagon on any day, but if you are committed to a healthy lifestyle, you will climb right back on and default to your new lifestyle. It may take time to relieve yourself of your old commitment to unhealthy, self-destructive habits, but once you make a new commitment, and it becomes a habit, then it will seem stranger and stranger to go back to the old ways.

No matter how many setbacks you may encounter, the important thing to remember is that this is your life and you need fitness and moderate eating to create and maintain a healthy body. That is why being weight-goal-oriented may be a double-edged blade -- since reaching the goal weight may lead you to believe you can relax again, lay off exercise and eat "normally." Forget that! Eating normally is for people who have ALWAYS eaten a moderate diet. If you have a weight problem, you have to change what normal is, and that means moderating your food intake forever. The sooner you accept that you will always have to watch what you eat and will always have to maintain a daily exercise routine, the sooner you will be able to spend your time living your life instead of waiting to get in shape before life begins. Losing slowly is far better than losing fast and then yo-yo-ing back again. I've been slowly taking off pounds for more than 3 years now, and the only thing that works is to KEEP AFTER IT! Log your food intake and sweat for half an hour a day, 6 days a week. You will love your strong body and the pleasure you get from wearing any old thing and looking good because you are strong and healthy.
