Busy day at work today. Almost time to go home, and I've finally gotten around to journaling. Did a pretty aggressive 30 minute workout on the elliptical trainer this morning. Tried out my new heart rate monitor. It doesn't have all the bells and whistles the other one had, but I never used those after the newness wore off anyway. Worked up a good sweat, and maintained about 160 BPM (beats per minute) for 25 straight minutes. It kills me how the experts say that a good judge of your maximum heart rate - that heart rate that you can achieve for only moments, and your heart won't beat any faster - equals 220 minus your age. That would put mine at 158 BPM. Uh, something is amiss here. I did a test once and found my Maximum Heart Rate is 194 BPM. You can go nuts trying to get those generic formulas to work for "you". Why is that important? I'm glad you asked. It's because your fat-burning zone is somewhere around 65 to 75% of your max heartrate, and your performance training is somewhere around 80 to 95%. Don't hold me to these numbers; I think you get the point. If my Max HR was really 158 BPM, then 70% would equal 110 BPM. I'm not going to burn off any fat there; I can get that high brushing my teeth. :D And if that's where I need to stay for an easy jog, I would have to stop every couple of feet. I'm on a roll here. I read an article the other day where a 92 year old marathon runner runs for about two hours at 165 BPM. Do the math; it doesn't work. Best thing to do is get yourself a HR Monitor and see what you do, and then work backwards to do the math. Ah, time to go home. Have a great evening, Everyone!
