How to politely decline cake?

Going to a friends house for a birthday dinner this evening. They are doing super casual, hamburgers & hotdogs. I'm good with that, no buns. Pickles are fine, little ketchup. (can I bring my own food; is that weird?).

But I'm SURE there will be cake. And it'll be homemade cake. And it will be amazing. I am SURE I am addicted to sugar, and even a little bit causes a cascade effect that I feel powerless to stop. I'm down 11+ lbs... do I say "I've been doing good, I deserve a treat", OR "no thank you". Then there is the social aspect, if everyone else is eating it, can I just have a spoonful or do I abstain completely? This is the problem every person who is trying to change their eating habits has. I'm good at work, I'm good at home, but going out is REALLY HARD. Even going out to a restaurant isn't so difficult on low carb. But someone else's home, for a social gathering... UGH.

I am an addict, I cannot have a little. I will politely decline.

Well, I am sure they won't be enforcing that everyone must eat the cake. Take what you can eat or drink and decline on the cake. What's wrong with saying no to a piece of cake? Who cares what everyone else is doing? Maybe they can handle having a piece of cake; you can't. You have to be focused on you and your health. You know you can't have cake and you know you are addicted to sugar, so don't even start with one bite. You are being social enough by showing up. That doesn't mean you have to eat cake to prove you are being sociable. And, yes it would be weird bringing your own food.

Thanks! It's hard not to "go with the flow". You are correct, it's not mandatory to eat cake (or anything else). I am doing this for my own health; I will not eat cake.

Be you own person and don't follow the crowd. Following other folks isn't always the best for you and isn't always wise. Good luck. You got this!

Sorry to hear about the cake-addiction. lol. When I was doing LCHF I always accepted birthday cake but only one piece. May was particularly bad for me but I kept it to birthdays ONLY. On my birthday I had cake too and a birthday-beer (or two). On Christmas Day I had a glass of champagne and the same on New Years Eve. Life would be pretty dire without it wouldn't it? We all want you to succeed, and so you can. You can be strong. You're a wife and a mother and that takes sheer determination - having a small child and a big child in the same house... :) Cake should be a "walk in the park".

If it is really good cake and I really want it, then I have a small bite or two, and truly enjoy it. Of course, it's easy to pass up crappy food...listen to yourself...you'll know what to do. BUT...if one bite will make you go off the deep end...maybe you should follow your advice in your last line of your post. Good luck!

I forgot to say - I never accepted cake if it wasn't a birthday cake. That was how I had to pigeon-hole it in my head.

Thanks! It is a birthday! And I don't actually know what kind of cake it will be. I can avoid most cakes. I think I'll make an exception for carrot cake, because OMG do I love me some carrot cake. But other than that, I will politely decline.

carrot cake? OMG...that usually has the cream cheese icing. Perhaps you should just skip the party! LOLOLOL

Shall we really hurt ourselves and mention our favourite cakes? Mine is simnel cake, oh and a nice moist spongy gingerbread cake, oh and my wife's zucchini bread cake, hmm and a really jammy victoria sponge, oh and... umm I'd better shut up now eh? :) Don't go Dewy, just don't go...

hopefully, there will be fruit or something other than cake? Maybe a little white lie that sugar has been affecting you so you are staying away for the week? I know about that sugar demon. I am having knee pain today and sitting here wanting to run to 'my friend - sugar'. It truly is addictive. Enjoy the party and maybe just walk away once they start passing around the cake

I have never liked cake (and baking is one of my trades!). I always found it easy to decline even before weight loss was necessary. But others didn't always find that decline acceptable. When others try to push the cake on me, I always reply with a half-joking "YOU'RE NOT THE BOSS OF ME!" and everyone has a good chuckle and they move on.

If you think it will make you fail, don`t have it. Just say no. If it is a casual party no one should be watching what you are eating anyway. If it was a dinner party/more formal I would offer to bring a cheese selection. Stay strong sister!

Just keep vaguely saying "maybe in a little bit" if asked about the cake, and if pressed, say "I'm just so full I'm going to pass on it this time". If they're really persistent (and I have some seriously persistent friends) then ask them if you can take some with you, and throw it out before it comes into your house. If it's a food trigger for you, then yes, you should absolutely avoid eating it or having the temptation, but someone else's party is not the time or place for such revelations! :)

Hey, that's more cake for others. You're doing them a FAVOR!

You probably won't even need to make a big deal out of not having cake, just don't take a plate when they are passed out. If you do need to explain, remember that these are your friends and they could help you on your journey. Without getting to deeply into explaining, if they insist, say you have been working very hard to lose weight and don't want to stop now.
