Neurologist ruled out sarcopenia, which explains why exercise didn't reverse my muscle weakness. I asked about low testosterone, but the doctor said that was in vogue, but not a likely cause. I'm grateful it's not sarcopenia because I tended to beat myself up: if I had exercised more, watched tv less…

Explains why Pilates, weight lifting, rowing, cardio, etc. didn't have any impact. Sarcopenia is generally reversable.

Great that it is reversible. Can it be avoided?

Well Chris, at least now you know what it isn't. I hope you can get more info if your symptoms persist.

oofster, people who are sedentary, are most at risk for sarcopenia. Exercise, particularly strength training, is the best prevention.

Do you have a plan to discover the cause?

More testing, including an MRI to rule out spine.

I had an EMG today, which consists of running electric current through fingers and arms.

Yup, very familiar with them, used to assist with them years ago when I did a different type id nerve testing.

Yeah, I need to buy me some weights. I mostly run on tread mill and outdoor walks, when the weather permits it. Rarely do much strength training.

oofster, don't have to become an Olympic lifter. Even training with light weights is beneficial.

Aldi's has kettle balls right now here for $19.95 set f 3. 5#, 10#, and 15#. I have the dumbbells and just bought the kettle balls, I also go to a gym, but like having an option for at home. I also have a set of 3# hand weights.

C.C Yeah, I don't think I'll do any hardcore body building for sure.I don't want to look bigger then hubby. A set of dumbbells or kettle balls sound nice. I would like to improve my female shape, and gain strength, as I get older. Thanks Wholefoodnut I will def look for some of those items, and add them to my exercise room.

I'm a 65 yo female. I do weights mostly at the gym, slowly working up to heavier. Strength trying is good to strengthen your bones and improve or stave off osteoporosis, help arthritis. The book Younger Next Year for Women. Awesome book. It's good for you!!!

Electromyography (EMG) is a technique for evaluating and recording the electrical activity produced by skeletal muscles.[1] EMG is performed using an instrument called an electromyograph, to produce a record called an electromyogram. An electromyograph detects the electrical potential generated by muscle cells[2] when these cells are electrically or neurologically activated. The signals can be analyzed to detect medical abnormalities, activation level, or recruitment order or to analyze the biomechanics of human or animal movement. - Wikipedia
