It is my understanding that one would have to run more than three miles to burn the calories in a slice of cake. Counting calories, nothing else, because I can’t outrun my fork.

It depends on how much you weigh - a really heavy person burns more calories per mile than a light person. But, yes, eating well and less is the best way.
