Is anyone else having issues with oxalates? Apparently, many of the “healthy foods” I’ve been eating are causing extreme pain. 😳 Now what? I’m a celiac, allergic to cows’ milk and egg whites, have to restrict protein because of kidney issues and now oxalates. How the heck am I supposed to get needed nutrition?

Johanne, so sorry you're having a hard time finding foods that won't negatively affect you. Can your doctor possibly help you put a list of foods together? I hope you're able to find a solution. 💕

Cc, I’ve already had the talk with my Dr. He’s going to set up appointments with a nutritionist. I’m just feeling so discouraged.

Tr3vi, it sounds like you’re in the same boat. I eat lots of bean dishes with brown rice . . . both off the menu, along with spinach, most nuts and seeds, many “healthy” fruits, sweet potatoes and on and on and on. What’s left are the foods I’ve been avoiding . . . peeled apples, white rice, peas, corn, etc. This is just totally wacky. NO DARK CHOCOLATE, or ANY chocolate. 😕

A nutritionist sounds like a good idea.

Unfortunately some people have adverse reactions to quite a few foods that are considered healthy for most people. My DIL has been working with an immunologist, a gastroenterologist and a registered dietitian/nutritionist at Duke Health in Durham NC and currently has just 7 "safe" foods that she can eat. They are hoping to eventually be able to expand her food choices but for now she is very limited. She does have to take some nutrient supplements to make up for inadequacies in her diet. On the positive side, she is feeling MUCH better and is healthier than when she had a more diverse diet. It was initially very challenging for her, but once she stuck with it and felt better she found it easier to not eat the foods that were making her sick. Remember that everyone is unique and what works for one person will not work for everyone. I hope the dietitian/nutritionist and other members of your medical team can help you determine the foods work well for YOU.

Have you googled low oxalate foods? Found a long list there myself. it also gives the advice to increase vitamin C and fluid to protect your kidneys and flush the oxalates out. you may know more about this than I but I hope that helps

Find a good holistic doctor who knows something about food. Most doctors don't know anything about nutrition. Good luck to you.

Rose, I have done a great deal of study in the last several weeks since I found out. The problem I’m running in to is the lists don’t always agree. 😕

Erika, my Dr has been wonderful about studying these things as I run into them, being willing to test and make sure I get to the specialists I need. I’m really lucky to have him. I know many Drs aren’t as open minded.
