Johanne的日记, 2011年01月23日

It definitely looks like a winter wonderland out there. So far we have another 3" on top of our 9" and it's still coming down. It's very pretty. Daffodils and Iris would be prettier. I have to wade out and refill the bird feeders at some point. I do enjoy the winter birds. I have a weird holly outside my window (it looks like a yerba mate, but they're sub-tropical, so I know it's not one). It's an evergreen, so the birds use it as shelter. Since it's up against the house, I would imagine it retains some heat. My favorites are the wrens, but the cardinals and blue jays are definitely flashy.

I've finished my lovely morning coffee, and, as much as I'd like too, I'm not going to make more. It makes my heart jittery when I do. I'm off to make breakfast and finish warping up the big tablet loom for a pretty complex project. That should keep me busy for a few weeks.

We are also keeping the feeders full for all the wee ones. I have a holly berry bush on the south side of the house that they are taking refuge in as well. I put out alot of deer chow, but notice they are having a difficult time getting to it. The snow is too deep and the ice layer is probably hard for them to get thru. Not many wildlife tracks in the yard since the last storm. Sad about that, hope they are OK.

I had some deer tracks and then some fox ones - I have too much snow and I agree daffodils would be better!

Well, we have had possums coming around for food as well as deer, rabbits, and other little critters, as well as the Coyotes. My favorite bird to watch is the Pileated Woodpecker...they are sooo huge and I love to watch them fly!

Bren, I don't make quilts. My mom makes beautiful ones. I do all types of fiber arts, spinning and weaving. The piece I am putting on the loom now is tablet weaving. It makes a narrow woven band. This one will be about 2 1/2" wide and will have Celtic patterns and words woven into it. I will try to post pictures. Love you back!

Babs, I'm sure the deer are OK. I hope the thaw sets in soon. Hugs!

Abba, I live in town, so the wildest critters we ever see are squirrels and they're a riot. This is the most snow we've had on the ground at one time in the seventeen years I've lived here.

Steph, when I lived in the woods in Virginia, I saw Pileated Woodpeckers all the time. Here all I get are the Hairy and Downy Woodpeckers. They're adorable. I did see a red-headed one once, but he hasn't been back. The largest birds I get at these feeders are Blue Jays. They make the little Juncos and titmice look bitsy.

You too Info. It sounds like, starting tomorrow through Wed., we're in for yet another round. This one is going to start with ice with, supposedly, 10" of snow on top. Wahoo!!! (I say that sarcastically.)

The "holly" might be Oregon Grape, but they get a bluish berry instead of a red berry. We have both Oregon Grape and regular holly growing in the forest here, so it's easy to see the difference between them. We get downy woodpeckers here. They're a really big flashy bird, and they make a huge noise when they're pecking on a Douglas fir. Our jays are not so flashy. They're Stellar's Jays, and the blue feathers are mixed with dark gray, but their crest is really pronounced. They are vary obnoxious and will jump right on your picnic table and steal your food.

It's some kind of Ilex, but it looks nothing like a holly. It's an evergreen, it doesn't have prickles on the leaves (they look more like a fat bay leaf), the leaves are much less leathery than a standard holly, it's a bush, but it also vines up the side of the house and has very thick, hairy root clusters that grow into the brick and window screens if you let it. Until I looked up Yerba Mate (because I wanted to find out if the chocolate tea was safe), I had never seen anything like it. It's definitely an Ilex (there are over 600 varieties) but it's not like anything I've ever seen before. The Jays here are pretty bold, as well. Our downys are about the size of a chickadee. They're so cute.
