Using the following formula, I calculated my calories burned using my own heart rate:
C=(0.4472 X HR-0.05741 X W + 0.074 X A - 20.4022) X T ÷ 4.184
HR= Heart rate W= weight A= age T= time
Measure heart rate after warm up (should be around 90 bpm or more) Keep HR between 90-150 or double your resting HR.
Mine resting HR is 75 (average) so my HR while exercising on my elliptical for 30 mins at a rate of 3-4 mph (moderate) is around 160, so I burned 471 calories...were as my elliptical shows a burn of less than 300. I think I'll start using this method from now on when it comes to my workouts. Might look into some more research on it but its basically the same method those high priced monitors use. Might seem like a lot of math buts worth it if its more adequate. What method do you use?
