On my own for the next 3 weeks at the renovation, with hubby having to go off to a conference. Weird, but sort of nice too, having the place all to myself. I have a very long list of things I'm supposed to get done and am roughing it a bit, as we don't have a TV or cooker yet, just the radio, microwave and George Forman grill. The cooker's being delivered in 5 days -- exciting after the last 2 weeks without one! We do have a fridge, though, and a washing-machine -- an absolute necessity with all our dirty work clothes and my workout gear.

All this is luxury compared to my 3 months here last summer. Then, I had no kitchen sink, no running water inside, or heating. I did have a kettle, though, that I filled from the outside hose, a microwave, toaster and fridge. Like last time, I don't have a car up here but it's only a 20-minute walk to the nearby store, and I've got the internet and my mobile, so I don't feel too isolated. It's good having to do without some of the usual basics, like being able to wash, have clean clothes and cook properly; it really makes you appreciate these things -- things we tend to take so much for granted. (I think about this now, with all the news on the radio about Syrian refugees...)

Time alone feels good and is even a bit of a luxury for most people these days. I look on it as being like a retreat. Last year, I managed to get the entire house painted from top to bottom, supervised the driveway being put in, and gave up smoking. This year, I've got the garden and lot of finishing to do, and will be continuing with my newfound weight loss and fitness. Last year, I even ended up a bit reluctant to return to "civilisation". Once this place is finished, I really must try to take some time on my own like this every year, if possible.

Well, must crack on, before it's time to scrub down for the day. I've vacuumed up almost as much building-dust with my nose today as I have with the hoover!
