Yay!!! Welcome back, Maggie! And so happy to hear you're eating plant-based! I've been experimenting with some yummy vegan eats, as well! I'm 90% plant-based these days, but occasionally have some dairy products, depending on who is cooking, lol

I'm going to report that your account has been hacked :)
I like the thought of vegan, but I don't think I could actually do it. Roast Chicken and roast lamb is just too nice ;)
Might pay to record your food for a week in something like 'cronometer' and it will show you what vitamins/minerals that you are lacking in your vegan diet. You can then supplement these areas with a multi vitamin or other targeted tablet.
Hopefully we will see th weight falling off you now !!
Good luck !!

The thing is that the dietry recommendations are based on the average diet (that is, one that includes animal products). When I first went plant-based, I started taking supplements, including B12, as I heard it's the main one vegans are deficient in.
Then I asked someone with a PhD in anatomy and physiology as it didn't seem right to me when our ancestors mostly ate plants - they wouldn't have taken supplements, lol.
She explained a lot of stuff that went over my head in terms of how it works, but the basis was that B12 is a co-enzyme that assists in breaking down food and if you eat meat and other animal products, you need more of it to assist in digesting it. The same is true for calcium (if you don't eat meat, you allegedly need less of it).
I still take supplements, in spite of her advice, but I thought it was interesting, and worth researching more!

"Some ancestors" were eating plant based diet without washing those plants and were getting some B12 from bacteria in that dirt, plus they were eating yeasts, mushrooms, fish, eggs, etc. B12 is quite important in building, for example, DNA molecules in our cells. We've got quite a significant B12 store in our liver, it can last up to 5-10 years without dietary replenishment.

Good on you. I think a plant based diet is the healthiest way to go.

True, Dimavs! It's so hard to see the full picture, as there are so many variables. Especially considering so many of our fruits and veges contain pesticides and are artificially preserved - we would need more of certain things to help our bodies deal with that, too!

Is yeast vegan? It’s sort of half animal half plant.

Yeast just got one cell, it's hard to imagine a half of yeast :-) And, btw, yeasts are eukaryotic cell, the same as fungai (or mushrooms).

Hey Magpies1990, congrats and I definitely support you. It worked for me. Are you a Collingwood supporter?

Cool. Such good info here. I am interested in B12 metabolism and it's effect on the brain. I have MTHFR mutation that means I don't process B12 properly. And yes, I take methylated B12 supplements at regular intervals.

I've got an opposite problem, quite good genetically in absorbing B12, it causes propion bacteria overgrowth and acne as a result.

The name just got me. Coincidence? Thought I'd just ask. Mine was too. Anyway, good luck with your weigh loss. This site really helped me. Tell your other half....go tha pies!
