9/2/12

It's 3 AM and I can not sleep. I'm cold and then hot. It's the silly menopause symptoms again. Just can't seem to get comfortable, so I thought I would journal. I finally finished the book weight loss surgery for dummies. It was very interesting and had a lot of good information in it. I have figured out through my reading that my biggest obstacle to losing weight is my own head and what I feel or think about myself and others. Essentially, it's interpersonal relationships in my life that has spurred me to eat my troubles away. All my weight issues started when I hit puberty (age 13). I was bigger than the rest of the kids, but not fat. Kids can be cruel though. They tease anyone that is not like them. I was painfully shy when I was young, but learned through the years and teasing to grow thick skin. I also learned to not take the teasing by anyone. My mother's husband would tease me about my "fat ass" years ago and I finally spoke up and told him that "I put myself down enough as it is and I don't need his help." He shut up after that.

I'm now reading another book called "The emotional first aid kit: a practical guide to life after bariatric surgery" The book starts a the decision making process of whether to have the surgery or not and gives me exercises to do. I figured I would do the first one in my journal.

Pros for having surgery

1. I'll lose weight quickly
2. I'll be able to have a normal life
3. I'll be able to move better and do more activities
4. I'll feel better and have more energy
5. I'll be able to do things I haven't been able to do in years
6. My high blood pressure, back and knee pain, and shortness of breath will either improve or disappear.
7. I'll be able to clean my own home and take care of things around the house.
8. I'll have a tool to help me stay on a diet.
9. Increase in self-esteem
10. I have family and friends that are very supportive
11. I'll get my life back and be more active and social.

Pros for not having surgery

1. I will not be taking the risk of surgery
2. I will not have to pay for my portion of the surgery
3. I will be able to continue to eat normally
4. No stress on the body or mind
5. No additional costs for surgery, clothing, or protein shakes.

Cons for having surgery

1. Surgical risk of infection, blood clots, etc.
2. Cost of having surgery
3. Dealing with the side effects--dumping syndrome, small meals, etc.
4. Emotional issues to deal with regarding losing weight and looking better. Feeling that loss of power. Having to examine myself closely for why I use food for comfort.
5. Time lost from work
6. Some friends are discouraging me from having it.
7. Having to follow up with doctors for years.

Cons for not having surgery

1. I stay fat or have a difficult time losing the weight yet again with a high chance of regaining it.
2. All of my health issues remain and the cost of medication is unchanged.
3. I won't be able to do many of the things that I would like to do because of my weight.
4. I'll continue to be reclusive.
5. Other health issues may pop up in the future and my lifespan shortens.
6. If I go on a diet, I have no extra help to limit my hunger or sweet tooth and thus increases my chances of failing yet another diet.

That was a good exercise. I'm sure there are more things that I can't even think about. I'm still leaning toward having the surgery done, but we'll see what happens over the next 6 months. You never know what might happen.

Another exercise is to write down all my goals:
1. Goal weight 140#
2. Run in a marathon and finish it
3. Be able to cross my legs
4. Be able to fit in theatre seats with no problem
5. Go back to do patient care in my career.
6. Clean my own house
7. Do gardening outside
8. Start dating
9. Go do things with friends without any back or knee pain.
10. Look descent in a swimming suit

That's at least 10 goals if I lose the weight. It would be great to do any of those and almost feels unattainable. I hope I can achieve all of these no matter what I do to lose the weight. Julie

I know you are a nurse, and I don't ask this out of disrespect... Have you read any of the books that talk about the effects of low fat/high carb diets for some people? Most of the carbs that are eaten turn directly to sugar and increase your insulin levels to the point that we become metabolically resistant and continue to gain weight, even on low amounts of calories and fat. I personally had a horrible time with trying to lose weight and was eating "healthy". After reading a couple of Atkins books, watching many documentaries, reading a couple of Gary Taubes' books, I am a true believer that many of us are much better off on a low carb (and, yes, high fat) diet with moderate amounts of protein. I feel better than I ever have in my life. I am dealing with my own issues and have set myself back a couple of times but that isn't the fault of the foods I am eating. I have also seen all of the perimenopausal symptoms disappear. No more hot flashes or night sweats, no more mood swings, and a libido that returned. PMS got a lot better too. Ultimately, the choice to have the surgery is yours and no one should tell you otherwise. But I do think you owe it to yourself to read up on low-carb WOE before going through with such an extreme procedure. Just my opinion, for what it is worth. Hoping for a great outcome for you, whatever you decide.

I hear you on those menopause symptoms, hot flashes during the heat wave were unbearable. And you have to wait until you go without a period for a year before you can say you are through menopause...which can take years and years. When I started this weight loss I figured I had to lose at least 150 pounds and it seemed overwhelming...how could I ever lose that amount of weight? I remembered this Chineese proverb I heard once, a journey of a thousand miles starts with a single step. So every day I tried to take one step on my journey and there have been some set backs but I'm over half way there. You are so right about the emotional side of obesity, there are times I have this irrational urge to eat massive amounts of food that have nothing to do with hunger or even missing certian foods, just the need to eat so that I can go back into hiding. It almost like I'm afraid of success. This is the hardest thing I've had to deal with but also the most important. Being able to recognize this self sabatoge and reason my way though them is key and I find the more I lose the greater the fear becomes.

I never take offense to anything anyone else has to say on this site. I know all advice is given for the right reasons. To help me. I thank everyone for all their comments. I've not chosen any of the other diets on this site for a couple reasons. First one is that I'm on a medically supervised diet and following their recommendations. The doctor will slowly advance my diet "rules". Focusing on only one or two rules per month makes the diet easier to be successful at. The dietician will look at my food log each month and make additional suggestions on dieting for me. My second reason for not using many of the diets is that I've been on many of them before and have failed at them. Nothing against the diet, but there was obviously something that didn't work for me. Most probably it was my own head that got in the way, but I don't want to revisit possible failure. Any and all the diets on this website will work if you follow the diet. My problem is my own inability to follow the diets. No diet is easy--the present one I'm on included.
