Woke up at 3:30 to the annoying intermittent drone of the alarm clock. I'd shoot it, but I'd just have to buy another one. I'm pretty dedicated about getting up early, once I'm committed to it. But, I've never been one of those people that just can't wait to spring out of bed in the wee hours, and can do so without even setting an alarm clock. I stay up too late at night, and I'm pretty exhausted when I get to bed. No problem with insomnia on this end. Ran near 3.5 miles on the treadmill at a 1.0% incline at 80-85% HR effort. Getting started is the hardest part. I just begin with putting one foot in front of the other, and feel like a locomotive pulling 100 cars behind me, slowly building up steam, until I'm chugging merrily along. It must be condensation that leaves me dripping wet after the ordeal.

When I got home last night, DW was sleeping, so I went ahead and took care of the animals. Still sleeping. I was getting hungry, and I knew if I waited much longer for her to get up, I'd end up binging. So, to the pantry I went, and returned with a can of Progresso's light chicken and dumplings. Dumped it into a bowl and into the microwave it went. Just as I was finishing up the whole can, out comes DW. She had intended to make stew with the leftover roast from the other day. Not a problem. I didn't need it anymore, and she wasn't hungry. The whole can of soup is only about 240 calories, so figured I'd have some tostito chips and salsa later - which I did.

Yesterday, I made an interesting and somewhat depressing discovery: I thought 2 scoops of the whey/protein mix was one serving. Nope. Somewhere on the label, the directions say basically that extreme or intense athletes should take 2 scoops after a workout, which is double the calories and double the protein that one should normally take. So, instead of taking 26g of protein at a shot, I've been taking 52g and 300 calories, instead of 150. Crap! So, I had to go back into my diet calendar and straighten it out. I was still under my RDI, but it sucked anyway.

Here's an interesting article I found that talks about the merits of protein and how much is too much.

How much protein?

I'm proud of myself getting up at 0510, 330 is wild! And yes, I dont like doing it, but it does make me feel good when the workout is done. I take naps though as I do it on weekends for workouts. I feel like a fisherman or hunter getting up early like that. I will have to check out that protein article. I mainly stay away from it, but I did drink some today after my big ride.

Gawd...DK - 3:30am? Yikes! Yes, I read another artcile about protein absorbtion - especially with whey protein drink and it is useless to consume more that 30g at a time since body can only use about so much - the rest will be wasted! Protein from food is metabolozed a little differenty and we can absorb a little more but from what I learned 30g per meal od snack is about right.

Yeah, HCB, like .36 X body weight in grams per day. Mine works out to about 88 grams of protein. Since I like to be in that 50-30-20 range for carbs, protein and fats, and I was doing 56g at a whack, I think my balance was a little off. Ryan, that's what I was thinking: 1st mistake of the year. Great minds think alike. Yes, John. I started doing the protein thing mostly because, even though I was staying under my RDI, my protein intake was disproportionately lower. If I lowered my carbs to make it all balance, then I wouldn't be getting enough of anything. This way, I can bring my mix into balance, and the protein curbs my appetite so I don't go over my RDI.

Now I have funny alarm clock story!!! I typically use my cell phone as my alarm, but the battery died before bed and I didn't feel like going to the kitchen to plug it up, so I used our old alarm clark. That thing woke me up that morning, and I HAVE to hit snooze at least twice before getting out of bed. Like you I can't just jump up and be ready to go. It's been FOREVER since I used this thing and I can't find the frigging snooze button. I'm laying in bed with my eyes closed, just feeling around trying to feel my way to the snooze button. Still cant find it, getting very frustrated. After I'd say a sold couple of minutes, I give up and just yank the friggin cord out of the wall....... the alarm is still buzzing. So I rip the battery cover off intending to rip out the batteries. There are no batteries in it. HOW IS THIS THING STILL GOING OFF. Now I'm trying to find the friggin off switch. I can't find it so I'm flipping every single switch I see and it is STILL GOING OFF!!! I'm just plain pissed now so I take the clock, get out of bed and chuck it in the other room... I can still hear it from the other room. SO I get back up and stuff it under pillows and blankets in the other room..... I can still hear it............ when my husband got out of the shower and went to make breakfast he found the alarm clock buzzing in the spice cabinet in the kitchen on the opposite side of the house.

Dang, Terry! You really 'didn't' want to get up. I think you need to perform an exorcism on that alarm clock. Funny! :)

52g of protein is wicked awesome. I work hard to get that done. Sorry it messed with your food diary and your macronutrient calculations though. Funny about the alarm clock. I just use my internal alarm clock and get up when I get up. You're so consistent about the early morning hours, I thought you did the same. My bf has a rooster sound to get himself up. Now there's something that drives me up a wall. Cock-a-doodle, cock-a-doodle, incessantly.

Helewis - a Cock-a-doodle alarm clock? That is too funny, and I also would HATE it!

Love the alarm clock story! I also struggle with getting up early. And I made a similar food mistake, as the toast I was having every morning was twice the calories I thought. Oh, well, onward!

Thanks so much for the article about protein portions. Great reading! Great reminder too! For me the early rising has a great deal to do with the level of darkness in the room. So tough to hop out of bed when the room is pitch black. I wake up without the alarm at 4:30 because of my eagerness for my work day. My first thoughts are about what we are going to do in class today. This morning my first thoughts were about swinging by to drop a dallop of low fat sour cream on your soup as a garnish. Not really! Just jestng! Just jesting! Have a great weekend.

Your article makes me think my old "trainer" needs to be a bit more educated.

Sorry, 'glad' instead of "glag". Must have been thinking of 'gag'. :)

I can read the headline now. "Local Man Injured While Aiming for Alarm Clock." The moral of the etching is as follows. Please don't shoot your alarm clock.
